Tournament format
Ten teams are divided into two groups to play for the IIHF U18 World Championship. In both groups every team plays each other once. Winner of the game gets 3 points. If the game is tied after 60 minutes, 5-minute overtime is played to determine the winner. Winner after overtime gets 2 points. If the game is still tied after overtime, penalty shootout follows (3 series). Winner again gets 2 points, the losing team in overtime or shootout is awarded 1 point.
Group stage winners will advance directly to semifinals. Second and third placed teams in each group play quarterfinal games (A2 – B3 and A3 – B2). There is only one decisive match in every play-off round.
Last two teams from each group play two more games with teams from the other group. The table will contain 3 matches of each team. One from the regular group (A4-A5 or B4-B5) and two from the relegation group (A4-B4, A4-B5; A5-B4, A5-B5).
